TASMANIAN DAILY LIFE // Gerd Ludwig
Summary: Tasmania - usually referred to by Australians as "Tassie" - is Australia's second oldest state - around the size of Ireland and a population of 473,000. It is also its smallest state.
Aborigines first settled in Tasmania some 30.000 years ago by migrating across the land bridge that joined Tasmania to the rest of Australia. In 1642, the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman was the first European to discover Tasmania but settlement did not start before the early 1800s. Convicts formed part of the first groups sent to establish a foothold.
Hobart, Tasmania's capital, began as a settlement of 262 Europeans in 1804. With less than 130,000 inhabitants, it is Australia's smallest capital. Historic buildings, the lively Salmanca market and a magnificent waterfront combine the progress of a modern city with the rich heritage of its colonial past.
